If you find that your child frequently complains of cold-like symptoms, you should check if it is not just an allergy to house dust. If caught early, you can reduce symptoms and significantly increase quality of life with appropriate countermeasures.
The term house dust allergy is not 100% accurate when it comes to the trigger. House dust mites and their droppings are responsible for the allergic reaction. There is a protein in the mites’ droppings, which, in people with allergies, causes the immune system to overreact when it comes into contact with it. He mistakenly identifies the protein as a major threat and uses the reaction to try to protect his body.
Dust mites are found in almost every bedroom. They are very flexible little animals. Dust mites feel most comfortable in a warm, humid climate. This is likely to be found in bed. There they nest in pillows and mattresses and feed on skin cells that we humans lose during the night.
Moths spread in their bed undisturbed. It might not be a pretty idea, but that’s not a problem for most people. They don’t even notice that their bed is shared with millions of moths.
However, people with house dust allergy should take various measures to reduce the number of mites and avoid contact with the allergen. Because moths can be completely defeated only in the rarest of cases. It lives in temperatures from -20 ° C to + 50 ° C and is relatively tolerant of the environment. The goal should therefore be to reduce mite populations, while taking appropriate hygienic measures to minimize contact with mite feces.
People who are allergic to house dust experience symptoms similar to those of a cold. This is because the immune system tries to defeat the allergen in a similar way to a cold virus. With the occurrence of cough and runny nose, putative dangerous invaders must be expelled from the body.
At the same time, there are other complaints. In the morning, this includes redness and irritation of the eyes. These feel dry and mild conjunctivitis can occur. The skin sometimes reacts with an allergic reaction. The result is an itch, rash, or hives.

After all, anyone with a house dust allergy would hardly find the relief needed in the evening to sleep rested or wake up frequently in the middle of the night. As a result, children wake up in the morning very tired and do not get the rest they want. Fatigue is associated with concentration problems and irritable behavior and is also reflected in school performance.
If a house dust allergy is simply ignored and no countermeasures taken, it will have long-term consequences. Problems arise at school and there is a risk of a cough to change the floor. This means that chronic asthma does occur, and it is a lifelong companion.
Tips to better deal with allergies
Although it is difficult to completely overcome a house dust allergy, there are some effective ways to reduce exposure to an unobstructed point. A prerequisite for this is that the children’s room is equipped in such a way that moths do not feel comfortable in it and can spread unhindered.
Avoid dust collectors
The first measure should be to prevent all dust collectors from entering the children’s room. Moths inhabit not only the bed, but also upholstered furniture, stuffed animals and carpets. They are difficult to clean, so they should be avoided in the children’s room. Wooden furniture is more convenient, since it does not provide any space for moths.
