According to scientists, milk from cows fed in this way contains more than twice the amount of omega-3 fatty acids than animals that receive only corn and concentrated feed in the barn.

Although there are more and more farms in Germany that rely primarily on grass and hay for dairy animals, dairy products do not indicate how high the proportion of fatty acids that are important for health are. A study at the University of Kassel, with financial support from Greenpeace, has solved this problem for the first time. Fifteen fresh dairy products from different dairy were screened for fatty acid composition. The focus was on both organic and conventional fresh milk, available for sale throughout Germany.

They came from different regions, and the study leaders also chose dairy products that were advertised as both natural and regional. Using the special method of analysis, the amount of maize in the total feed can be determined at the same time. The results of the study revealed significant differences in terms of the content of omega-3 fatty acids. The products were divided into three groups:

  • Organic Milk: Over 1g of Omega-3 FA/100g of Fat
  • Milk of Irish grass-fed cattle (eg Kerrygold products): more than 0.9g 3-FA/100g fat
  • Conventional milk from southern Germany: between 0.8 and 1g of omega-3 FA / 100g of fat
  • Conventional milk at low levels

Similarly, organic products performed better in the study of omega-3 content in 21 known yogurt and butter products.

Experts justify this aspect as follows: “High-performance cows” are fed mainly on concentrated feed, which usually consists of cornmeal and soybeans. Soybeans often come from abroad, because Germany imports soybeans from abroad. In many supplier countries, rainforests have to give way to their cultivation and long transportations also put pressure on our climate.

Grazing is still seen as a sustainable opportunity to conserve our green spaces. This not only makes pasture milk products like Kerrygold much tastier and more aromatic – but pasture farming is also of huge importance for climate policy, because pasture soils store huge amounts of carbon. At the same time, valuable CO2 basins, where meadows and pastures store in the upper soil layers, account for about a third of the carbon per hectare compared to arable land. This also applies to the deep layers: there are 196 tons of carbon / hectare there, which is 191 tons / hectare above the average forest floor. The arable land is 149 tons/ha.
