Manufacturer information: Riders with open arm, shock absorbing tread and ramp with Ultra-Grip for good grip and comfort. Colors: dark green (see photo), blue, red and white. Tread size: 12 x 7.5 cm. Weight per hanger: 500g approx. Material: Plastic with steel core. RRP: 199 euros. Information: www.flex-on.fr
First impression: Plastic outside, metal inside – this naturally looks inferior to other models tested, but it is also reflected in the lower price and somewhat lower weight. The special thing about these stirrups is the “shock absorbers” located under the tread as well as the metal hooks that work into the tread for better grip.
practical test: Stirrups are large enough to accommodate thicker riding boots and boots. However, the highly sensitive rider using regular Fillis stirrups feels a little lost. I found the stirrups unusually large. Other testers, on the other hand, praised the wide tread, but were unfamiliar with the metal hooks that grate the sole when riding dressage. They feel that they can no longer move their feet in stirrups. When riding, testers did not notice that the rubber buffers under the tread have a shock absorbing effect.
Conclusion: Durable simple stirrup. More suitable for cross country, jump and event than dressage.

“Ophena S” for Ophena
Manufacturer information: The magnet system attaches the rider’s and passenger’s shoe, slanted tread. Color: silver (see picture), pink lure, black onyx. Tread size: 5″ x 2″. Weight per hanger: 650g approx. Material: stainless steel (arch), plastic (tread). RRP: 319 to 379 euros. Information: www.ophena.de
First impression: The stirrups look futuristic, noble and stable. It is very big and heavy. The outer side is open. There is a magnet in the tread to prevent your foot from slipping. Magnetic insole for your riding boots or boots included in size required.
practical test: There is enough space in the brackets for thicker shoes. With the insole, it may be a little tight in shoes or shoes that are too tight. The magnet system works: the shoe sticks firmly to the tread. However, our testers find this annoying because the foot literally sticks to the arch and they can’t correct the posture. When a test contestant wants to get off quickly in a difficult situation, she has to bend over to free her feet. This experience taught us: Before the first ride, watch the manufacturer’s video that shows the movement of the foot with which the shoe came out of the fold.
Conclusion: Nice and great idea for wide shoes. But when riding dressage, the magnets hinder our test riders because their feet stick firmly to the stirrup.
“Flexcite Grip” by Springer
You can get Sprenger safety stirrups here, for example!
Manufacturer information: Shock absorbing stirrup with a curved shape, extra wide tread with non-slip grips. The stainless steel joint makes it easy to release the foot in the event of a fall. silver. Tread size: 12 x 6 cm. Weight per hanger: 590g approx. Material: stainless steel. RRP: 198 euros. Information: www.sprenger.de
First impression: Very large and heavy, looks high quality and stable. The unusual thing is that the stirrups are so wide at the top that even passengers in bulky shoes can easily slip out. The swivel joints at the top of the tread make the stirrup extremely flexible.
practical test: Compared to the older Sprenger “Bow Balance” and “System 4” models, the stainless steel tread immediately catches the eye. Testers are excited about the good grip it provides—even at high speeds and the slippery, wet sole of the boot. There is still a hint of doubt: Does the tread have enough grip that shoes with a rough tread can jam in? But in practice, we didn’t have that problem. Due to the width of the tread, the foot rests comfortably in the stirrup. Riders with joint problems find that the flexibility of the stirrup helps them cushion the swing. You feel a little less discomfort after riding compared to a solid stirrup.
Conclusion: A solid, simple stirrup for all disciplines that provides good support when riding. Good value for money.
Flexcite Grip is in great demand and is often sold out. You can order replacements from the same manufacturer here.
“Venice Light” by Tech Stripes (Test winner)
You can order safety stirrups from Tech Stirrups here
Manufacturer information: The safety mechanism releases the rider’s foot in the event of a fall by opening the movable exterior, and a slightly inclined tread surface with a pyramidal shape for secure hold. 22 colors. Tread size: 12 x 6.5 cm. Weight per hanger: 460g approx. Material: aluminum / stainless steel. RRP: 352 euros. Info: www.techstirrups.com
First impression: Not only because of the color is absolutely eye-catching, but it also looks high-quality and stable. Good weight, not too light and not too heavy. The stand material looks high quality and stable. The metallic finish also looks sturdy and makes a real statement with the silky, matte metallic look.
practical test: The tread has a special shape with sharp edges. As a result, the foot has great grip when riding without getting caught, even with shoes with a rougher profile. Thick shoes have plenty of room. The wide, slightly sloping tread feels safe and comfortable. After riding, the stirrups are easy to clean with a brush. Some stubborn grains of sand just get stuck in the safety lever joint, which was well lubricated by the manufacturer – it grinds, but it doesn’t seem to affect the function any more. On the other hand, we did not detect any signs of wear on the elegant and colorful coating of the temple.
Conclusion: Chic, not too chunky, sure. Also suitable for breeding. This stirrup was the most impressive in terms of comfort, quality and appearance, but it is also in the upper class in terms of price.
The test winner was sold out in four places. The “Light Edition” of the gun is currently available on Amazon.
Arena Alubro by Acavalo

Manufacturer information: With a locking and release mechanism, the spring relieves pressure on the soles of the feet, ankles, knees and hips. 10 colors. Tread size: 12 x 6.5 cm. Weight per hanger: 500g approx. Material: aluminum (arch), polyamide (hinge arm and footrest), stainless steel (tread). RRP: 149 euros. Information: www.acavallo.com
First impression: Comfortable size and weight. Make a lasting impression and look stylish. The plastic arm also looks sturdy and of good quality.
practical test: The manufacturer promises that the tread and bracket should descend under short-term loads, such as at a canter. Test riders did not notice this spring effect. However, they praise the fact that the wide tread is very comfortable. The stirrups have a good grip thanks to the metal hooks on the ladder surface. As with the Sprenger model, test riders weren’t sure if boots with a rough-profile could stack in them. However, this did not happen in our test. Advantage over the Tech Stirrups-tested Venice Lite stirrups: Because the hinged arm hinge is attached to the top of the stirrups, there is no dirt from the sole of the shoe and the stirrups are easy to clean.
Conclusion: Stylish, sporty and high-quality stirrups for all disciplines. Great price and performance! We cannot predict how durable the plastic parts will be. The manufacturer also offers the same aluminum model (“Arena Aluplus” model, RRP 199 €).
