Stiftung Warentest examined wet food for adult dogs and puppies. Instead of well-known brand products, cheap supermarket brands are disguised.
Castle – There are now many types of dog food. Above all, they must provide adult dogs and puppies with adequate nutrients and not contain any harmful additives. But which dog food supplier has the best product? Stiftung Warentest examined 22 types of wet food for adult dogs and six types for dogs. The result is that higher price is not always better. In addition, dog owners have to adapt to changes in food purchases: some dog food manufacturers are experiencing delivery bottlenecks.
However, more than half of the types of adult dog food are convincing and have been rated “very good” or “good” by Stiftung Warentest. The test winners are mostly products from the supermarket and discount brands. Stiftung Warentest classifies the following types of wet food for adult dogs as “very good”:
- edica: Great meal with lamb, chicken, pasta and carrots
- ALDI: Classic Romeo Pie with Beef and Country Vegetables
- Lidl: Orlando pieces with poultry meat and muscle in broth
- repeat: yes! Soft pie with game and poultry
Dog: Stiftung Warentest takes a closer look at food
According to Stiftung Warentest, the dog food has been laboratory tested. The amount of fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins and trace elements that the product contains has been determined. The test is designed to meet the needs of a moderately active adult dog weighing 15 kg. In addition, it was examined whether food types contained harmful substances or undesirable components such as horn, feathers or bristles. Since some dog food manufacturers describe their products as “grain-free” and “no added sugar,” the lab also tested the products accordingly.
According to Stiftung Warentest, no harmful substances have been detected. Only two organic products have been rated as ‘adequate’: the nutrition recommendation does not match or the nutrient content is unsatisfactory. The Animonda Gran Carno dog food had the worst of it all: it lacked phosphorous, linoleic acid and magnesium – important nutrients for dogs. These are the three types of dog food with the worst test results:

Experts warn: Dog food for puppies does not contain enough nutrients
Small dogs need special attention, whether it be with food or when the puppies go to new homes. However, the test result for puppy food was significantly worse than that of adult food: only two products were rated as “good”. Experts from Stiftung Warentest advise against two types of wet food, they scored “poor”. This applies to wet food from food bowl،, Premier Beef With Chicken, Toddler & Puppy Food ZoroyalJunior with lamb and veal 70% meat and offal. Reason: Manufacturer’s information on the packaging. The recommended ration is not adequate, and the feed is lacking in important nutrients. But proper food is very important, especially for puppies.
According to Stiftung Warentest, nutrition should help the formation of plenty of tissue and strong bones within a short period of time. Puppy food should contain high-quality protein and adequate amounts of calcium, phosphorous, copper and zinc. These are the two test winners (rated “good”) for puppy foods:
- Junior Pedigree: Poultry Pie
- Edica: Great meal with beef and chicken junior
Not only is the nutritional content important for puppies, but also the amount of food. According to information from Stiftung Warentest, young dogs should not eat too much, otherwise they will grow very quickly. It can happen that the bones are not mineralized enough and are not strong. Dog owners should not only pay attention to the right food, but also pay attention to the new animal welfare law for dogs.
