How to get rid of ants, bugs, spiders and beetles in the apartment

Pesticide is not always necessary
With these tips, you can get rid of crawling animals in the apartment again

Whether it’s spiders, ants, moths, or insects – no one wants these pests in their home, but they do happen. Fighting them effectively and kindly is not so easy. Experts know some tips for stopping bugs in the home.

Ants, moths, crickets or bed bugs – anyone with animal roommates is often accused of poor hygiene. Insects and other crawling animals such as spiders usually enter the home to protect them from the cold. or looking for food. They are magically drawn to the fruit bowl on the table or the organic wastebasket. If they find good conditions, they like to nest for a long time.

Many people feel uncomfortable when four, six, or eight friends are at home. The desire to get rid of them very quickly and it is not uncommon to be very violent. They are treated with fly pumps, duct tape, insect spray, traps and baits. Result: individual samples are dead, but the next will surely come if access to them is not denied.

“In addition, it can happen that you are not only catching pests, but also harmless specimens or even beneficial beneficial insects that are already desirable,” says Kirsten Evers of the Consumer Center in North Rhine-Westphalia. Like a ladybird, for example, that eats annoying aphids on plants.

Decide first, then act

She advises first identifying the type of reptile. A list from the Federal Environment Agency, which lists many pests, inconveniences and typical benefits that occur in our country, is useful here. It contains instructions on how to combat it if necessary.

Trade offers many means of pest control in the home. The palette ranges from atomizers, sprays, and baits to electric vaporizers, strips, dispersal agents, and light traps.

“Caution should be exercised when using them, as some of these agents pose significant health risks,” says Kirsten Evers. “Most insect sprays contain pyrethroids as the active ingredients. These substances can lead to severe poisoning symptoms in cats, including death. In humans, they can act as a neurotoxin.”

Attractive traps instead of chemical batons

But there are gentler ways than the chemical club to banish pests. “For example, pheromone traps are well suited as a supportive measure to contain pest infestations,” says Evers. Pheromones are artificial attractants that attract males who stick to the trap. This interrupts the reproductive cycle and the pests can no longer reproduce.

The environment is also becoming more important for pest control professionals. “Many environmentally friendly agents have been known for a long time and are now even more important for companies,” says Markus Buschmann of the Association for the Promotion of Environmental Pest Control in Essen. Lots of chemicals.”

For example the silverfish. “They like the humid climate in the bathroom and kitchen,” says the expert. It is practically impossible to prevent them from entering the apartment. Many people hardly notice them because they live very hidden and seek darkness. Or they don’t view them as pests at all because they’re supposed to be harmless. But it can cause significant damage to books and wallpaper.

Everything is clear to forest cockroaches

“In the event of a large-scale invasion, you should do something about it,” Bushman advises. Instead of insect spray, which often contains toxic chemicals that can also harm people in the air, he recommends using bait cans. “Insects take the deadly active ingredient from them with their food without even entering the room.”

New for many sufferers is the visit of wooden cockroaches to the home. They are similar to the traditional cockroaches they are associated with. But all the clarity was provided: “They can fly and enter the house by accident only when they are attracted to the light,” says Marcus Buschmann. There is no need to be afraid of infestation, because wood cockroaches cannot breed indoors.

During the cold season, spiders love to search for warmth in apartments, which displeases many people. Instead of beating them to death, they should be captured and taken outside alive. Or make arrangements with them. Because they are useful animals that eat insects such as flies and mosquitoes and thus clean the house of insects.

Hire approved pest control equipment

A big topic is bed bugs – blood-sucking insects that bite people. Marcus Buschmann: “Often they are brought into apartments from abroad or stowaway in their baggage from vacation.” Anyone with a bed bug problem should not hesitate to hire a professional pest control agent as soon as possible. Successful control is challenging and requires a good knowledge of animal biology.

However, the search for a suitable pest control device has drawbacks. Kerstin Effers knows from her experience in the day-to-day advice of a Consumer Advice Center that there are many online providers that work unprofessional and write expensive bills.

It is important that the authorized company has a Certificate of Proficiency for Certified Pest Control. Kerstin Effers also advises clients to insist on using as harmless pesticides as possible: “For example, bait cans, gels, and traps rather than aerosols and fumes.”

Beware of flea market deals

It is often impossible to prevent insects and other crawling creatures from entering the home. But you can make it difficult for them, for example with fly screens on doors and windows. Ants are blocked by closing their entrance and providing an alternative source of sugar.

“Food pests such as moths are often brought along with purchases,” says Kirsten Evers. She recommends checking newly purchased food for possible infestation and then moving the flawless merchandise into sealable containers.

Sometimes pests come into the house in more unusual ways. “Be careful with the items used. A bargain from a flea market or a bulky trash find can certainly be infested with bed bugs and other insects,” says Marcus Buschmann.
