Ökotest has once again put 21 sunscreens for babies and children to the test. At least nine products were rated “Very Good” this year. However, unfortunately, some well-known and popular brand products fail due to questionable ingredients for baby skin.
Sunscreens for kids have improved
Here’s the good news: in 2020, Ökotest was only able to rate “Very Good” twice. In 2022, there are at least nine out of 21 products tested and fully recommended. Ökotest mainly examines the ingredients of creams and nine well-known brands are harmless. However, in some cases, critical substances have been discovered that are not suitable for children’s skin. A good baby sunscreen should be delicate, fragrance-free, water-resistant and, if possible, without sunscreen filters or questionable substances. However, this was not the case for all tested products.
Ökotest ranks these brands as poor or inadequate
Unfortunately, the laboratory found some substances in many creams, the consequences of which on children’s skin cannot be explained or can be shown to be harmful to health. These included UV filters such as octocrylene, which, according to animal experiments, can penetrate the skin and have negative effects on the organs. In addition, nanoparticles from metallic UV filters such as titanium dioxide or zinc dioxide were detected, which were classified as “probably carcinogenic”. However, mineral filters are the best option when in doubt.
Other important components are “controversial emulsions from the group of PEG / PEG derivatives, which can make the skin more permeable to foreign substances. And above all, creams with a high SPF, which are also suitable for sensitive skin, were compared. Unfortunately. , the preservative silver chloride was also found, which is also based on the mineral filter titanium dioxide.
The following three sunscreens known to children fail:
- Rossmann Sunozon Kids Sun Milk 50+ For 4.99 euros, it contains the controversial preservative silver chloride
- Eucerin Sensitive Protect Kids Sun Spray SPF 50+ For €22.25 it includes the identical chemical filter that can damage organs
- La Roche Posay Anthelios Pediatric Dermo 50+ The preparation for € 17.52 contains nanoparticles and PEG derivatives as well as silicone and paraffin
This shows that expensive brand-name creams are not necessarily better for children’s sensitive skin. It depends on cheap ingredients and creams from DM, Rossmann & Co. that can keep up.

Are certified natural cosmetics the best option?
As a consumer, you believe that certified natural cosmetics should be better and dispense with chemical additives. In general, Ökotest’s evaluation sees it this way. The tested natural beauty creams contain mineral filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are better options for children’s skin than the chemical filters listed above. In the 2020 test, Ökotest clearly critically rated incoming nanoparticles. At the time, an EU directive stipulated that labeling should take place at a certain level of nanoparticles. All three natural sunscreens in the test contain and advertise these as well. Only two brands lack the nanoparticle classification, although they can be detected.
However, nano-research is still very weak, although some people already know that they are harmful to health when inhaled. Therefore, some nanoparticles found in sun mist have already been banned because they are classified as carcinogenic. From August this year, these nanoparticles will be banned from food across the European Union.
The Wartentest Foundation also periodically analyzes children’s sunscreens with different concentrations and comes to different conclusions. Here you can compare:
You should pay attention to this when buying sunscreen
According to Ökotest, when buying children’s sunscreen, you should make sure that it contains mineral filters rather than chemical filters. Because these remain on the surface of the skin as a barrier and reflect the sun’s rays. Chemical filters can penetrate the skin and destroy children’s sensitive endocrine systems. Among the mineral UV filters, which he prefers the most, are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. So take a closer look at the ingredients. In addition, sunscreen for children should have an SPF of at least 30, if not 50.
Dermatologists recommend that babies and young children apply sunscreen an hour before sunbathing. Delicate and sensitive skin should not be exposed to the sun without protection. It is important to put sunscreen on your children again after each time they have fun in the water, and above all, do not expose young children to the sun unprotected for more than half an hour. The importance of sunbathing should not be underestimated when visiting the playground, balcony or terrace. If your kids or toddlers spend half an hour or more here, sunscreen is mandatory here too!
