Children should stay at home

Delitzsch. The sun is shining and the children are playing in the garden, in the big pit area, or under tall trees. At first glance, there is no indication of an emergency in the day care center “Am Park” in Delitzsch. However, the sponsoring association, the Volkssolidarität Nordsachsen district association, decided to take a drastic step: in the next six weeks, 45 out of 134 children could not be cared for. Jana Kunz, who is responsible for education at Volkssolidarität, explains that a lack of staffing makes it necessary. Four of the 20 permanent vacancies are currently vacant. In addition, there are long-term illnesses, holidays and pregnancy.

New Daycare Center in Vidimar: Construction in the Final Race

The State Youth Welfare Office and the North Saxony Youth Welfare Office have also been informed. “We are also receiving support for this path from this side,” explains Andrej Heim, General Director of People’s Solidarity in North Saxony. Share Parents’ Council. The solution was found together to divide the times among the children. The partial lockdown now affects all children for ten days each, spread over weeks. The parents were notified by letter to the parents. Children and parents are primarily affected, as are employers of parents who face these restrictions.

There is no other way, says Jana Koons, Yvonne Seifert Glaser and Andre Heim (from left) of Volksolidaratt. The day care center Delitzscher “Am Park” has to significantly reduce care due to a shortage of staff.

“The staff ratio in Saxony is very tight anyway,” says Jana Koons. Accordingly, twelve children of kindergarten age or five children of nursery age are assigned to one full-time specialist. This places Saxony in second to last place nationally. Vacation time, sick leave, and periods of additional training are not included. In fact, teachers often end up taking care of 18 or even 25 children. With constant failures, the upload limit has now been exceeded. On the one hand, the safety of children is at risk, the quality of care is not guaranteed, and on the other hand, it is also about the staff who can no longer renew, which also leads to health problems.

The day care center “Am Park” appears to be the first in Saxony to take such drastic measures, pulling the emergency brake, but officials are sure: things are no better in other facilities.

“We feel a massive shortage of skilled labour,” explains Jana Konzi. For a long time, the Delitzscher institutions were able to take advantage of its proximity to Leipzig. There, however, the same forces are needed now. Higher travel costs reduce the motivation to move to the surrounding area. Means: Personnel gaps cannot be closed so quickly. There are now three new employees on the horizon for the “Am Park” daycare center for August, September and October. In addition, starting school brings some relief.

Subscription payment will be checked

Can parents be compensated for canceled childcare? Andrej Heim explains: “According to the city’s Parental Contribution Act, reimbursement is granted no later than five consecutive days in which the facility cannot provide childcare.” It would be a courtesy decision by the city. However, the application was submitted to the city administration. The matter will now be examined there.”

Vacation counts

On the other hand, Yvonne Seifert-Glasser, president of the Am Park Day Care Center, is grateful to her staff for their perseverance and for continuing to do their work with love. On the other hand, she is aware that a lot of parents have already been requested in the past Corona years. In the past few days she has had to speak to several parents who are now having problems securing childcare. There is at least the possibility of “changing the days among themselves in order. Ten-day vacations for children during the six weeks are taken into account, so that the rule of two days does not apply after this time.” This time.

Staff shortages are growing across Germany

According to a survey on the occasion of the German KITA management conference, staff shortages in German day care centers in general are increasing. “An estimated 9,000 daycare centers in Germany operated more than half the time last year with a staff shortage related to supervision. This is more than double the number of daycare centers compared to the previous year,” said Udo Beckmann, Federal President of the Education and Training Association.
