Most parents in Lehrte send their children to grammar school
Know. The record at Gymnasium Lehrte: 197 children registered for the new school year. “This is the largest number of enrollments we’ve had to date,” says Principal Silk Brands. Last year, 189 fifth graders started the school. This shows that more than half of the new fifth graders in Lirty are likely to go to high school.

The city administration cannot currently say how many children in Lehrte go from primary school to secondary school. Reliable numbers are only available at the end of August. There are usually more than 400 children, and the city is not counting on that now. “It’s very archaic,” says city spokesman Fabian Nolting. At the beginning of the school year there were 373 students in the fourth grade, these children are now transferring to a high school. But there are also a number of students whose families have just moved to Lierte.
Grammar school begins in seven classes as in previous years. Repetitions make it almost like eight movements. “We are happy on the one hand, but it is also a challenge. Of course, we know that some of the students may have to fight back,” says Principal Brandes. However, the school must maintain the level of performance of the high school.

To date, 85 boys and girls are enrolled in Lirty Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS). Principal Bernard Melentin estimates that “there will be more”. Experience has shown that not all parents meet the registration deadlines. Last year, 97 students started fifth grade at IGS.
After the summer break, IGS will begin the fifth year with four terms. Mellentin doesn’t expect it to stay that way. Due to the children who switched to IGS during the school years, the current 10th year has grown from three to five classes with 123 students.
At Realschule Lehrte, 50 children are expected to start their fifth year, plus seven students who will repeat the class. Principal Markus Bohm expects three classes, also because the children included are counted twice. Last year, there were about 80 fifth graders in four classes.
Parents enrolled 42 children at Hammerwald High School, similar to last year. It has been shown that there are still very few enrollments. The high school, which was founded in 2018, is still under construction and usually starts with two classes in the fifth year.

Striking: children with special needs are unequally distributed in schools. Among the new fifth graders at the Lehrte Gymnasium, only one child is incorporated – although the majority of children go to the Gymnasium.

On the other hand, IGS Lehrte receives – according to the current situation – 14 children with special needs. Four children enrolled at Lehrte High School and nine at Hämelerwald High School. “This varies a lot from year to year for us,” says Principal Telschow-Don.
According to the School Act, all schools are essentially inclusive and can therefore offer joint lessons to children with and without disabilities. It is clear that parents see their children with special needs in good hands in some types of schools. Melentin sees this as “a misleading development at the expense of the basic schools”, and therefore they should dedicate lessons to other groups of students. However, the IGS director assures: “We can do it. High school graduates show that we have also succeeded in developing students in the higher performing category.”
