Opel brings the Astra back to the station wagon

KOmbis has fallen out of sight because everyone is clamoring for an SUV. However, if they are on offer, they are in high demand in this country. For example, Opel expects the new Astra station wagon, dubbed the Sport Tourer, to account for about two-thirds of the range’s sales. In the fall, you’ll follow the hatchback model that debuted in the spring and scored well here in the Driving Report.

As expected, there is a clear increase in length, for which an additional 1,100 euros will have to be paid. The Astra station wagon has a height of 4.64 meters and a measurement of 27 centimeters, which is roughly the benefit of the load space. The wheelbase is now 2.73 metres, an increase of 5.7 centimeters. The cargo space has a volume of about 600 liters instead of 422 liters, the maximum length of the cargo space is 1.80 meters and the volume is 1630 liters. Plug-in versions have to make slight compromises here.

The rear seat can be folded at a ratio of 40/20/40. Practical: the boot lid can be attached to the load floor if it gets in the way when transporting larger items. It is significant that the station wagon will also be available as an electric version from 2023. Technical data for this is not yet available.

The wheelbase is now 2.73 metres.

The range of engines for other models depends on the hatchback model. There is a small three-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 1.2 liters and 110 or 130 hp, four cylinders with a turbo diesel, a displacement of 1.5 liters and also 130 hp, and the highest model, a plug with a power of 180 hp. Here, a 1.6-liter gasoline engine is combined with an electric motor. The 225 hp variant will follow later. The purely electric range of the 12.4 kWh battery is limited to 72 kilometres.

Beginning in 1963, when the Cadet Caravan appeared on the market, the new station wagon was the eleventh generation. Prices start from 27,750 euros for a 110-horsepower gasoline engine in Elegance equipment and a six-speed manual transmission. Only for the 130-horsepower version there is also an eight-speed automatic transmission, then it costs 31,000 euros, and the price of the top model, plug-in, is 39,740 euros. Minus the support, 32,572 euros remained, which is the level of diesel. Opel pledges to take a minimum of 2,500 euros as a special contribution after the end of the support.
