Michel Blanc is a French lavender grower. He and his family were cultivating an area of about 200 hectares. The central building of their property in particular breathes history: the farmhouse is originally an old military fortress from the 13th century – a bastion, which the family acquired in 1838 and renovated in the 1960s. After that they set up here a large farm; Blancs are particularly fond of lavender. Time and time again, though, they have to adapt to new challenges. After traditional sheep farming was abandoned a few years ago because wolves reclaimed the area as their habitat, another much smaller animal is now causing massive damage. Young cicadas transmit bacteria that destroy many lavender plants. Cicadas are only two millimeters in size, they can hardly be seen with the naked eye and yet they are very destructive. While farmers in France struggle with this little enemy, lavender cultivation is increasing in another country – Bulgaria. Huge quantities of lavender are now grown and processed – especially in the capital, Sofia – being traded here. Is French lavender endangered now? (Source: Aarti, quoted by FUNKE magazines)
