9 out of 21 children’s toothpaste is deficient

Contains no fluoride, very little fluoride, a controversial dye: Many of the baby toothpastes in the test do not form well. Toothpaste for deciduous teeth should reliably protect against tooth decay. You need fluoride for that. Toothpastes should also not contain titanium dioxide: this controversial coloring agent is not necessary. Only 3 out of 21 products in the test met both. Why the children’s toothpaste test is useful for you

Brands such as Elmex, Odol-med-3, Karex and Weleda as well as products from Aldi, Lidl, Rossmann and dm were included in the test. Prices range from 60 cents to 7.90 euros per 100 milliliters.

Children’s toothpaste: For all children up to 6 years old

No one who becomes a mother or father can avoid the topic of children’s toothpaste: it is used from the first age of the child until the child’s sixth birthday. Children’s toothpaste contains less fluoride than adult toothpaste. Accurate dosing to avoid fluorosis. White enamel spots form on permanent teeth when children ingest large amounts of fluoride.

Nine toothpastes that don’t meet the fluoride recommendation

Children’s toothpaste should contain fluoride of 1,000 parts per million (parts per million). This standard recommendation from pediatricians and dentists is in effect as of 2021. However, nine products in the test did not comply. The effectiveness of fluoride against tooth decay has been scientifically proven. On the other hand, fluoride-free children’s toothpaste does not provide sufficient protection against tooth decay. That is why Stiftung Warentest rated children’s toothpaste with very little or no fluoride as poor.

Accurate evaluation of titanium dioxide in children’s toothpaste

Every kids’ toothpaste in the test contained a titanium dioxide coloring agent. The controversial ingredient will be banned in food from August. May damage genetic material (details in titanium dioxide FAQ).

Titanium dioxide is not necessary for dental care. Since young children swallow the toothpaste in whole or in part, we advise against the use of toothpaste containing tincture from the consumer’s preventive protection. There were 10 children’s toothpastes without titanium dioxide in the test, including two very good winners and a good toothpaste.

Toothpaste suitable for school children

When the first permanent tooth appears around the age of six, it is recommended to switch toothpaste: from extra children’s toothpaste to family toothpaste. Because children with permanent teeth can definitely take a universal toothpaste without zinc. But there are also special toothpastes for the little ones. It often tastes milder than adult products, but is usually more expensive. It is not necessary.

Fewer checks than adult toothpaste

Young children do not eat or drink foods that stain their teeth, such as coffee or black tea. Even exposed necks are not a problem with milk teeth. That’s why we don’t check with kids’ toothpaste – unlike adult toothpaste testing – how well they can remove color, and we don’t identify abrasion.
