Whether it’s at the daycare center, to the playground or to a picnic destination – parents are happy to take young children with them in their trailer, cargo bike or baby bike seat. The safety of the child should always come first. CosmosDirekt, Generali’s direct insurance company in Germany, gives advice on this.

Parents love to use two wheels when traveling with young children. No wonder – it often saves time and at the same time is good for the environment, your fitness but also your wallet. Despite all the advantages, 47.2% of people in Germany consider it dangerous to take children in a trailer, cargo bike or bicycle seat.[1] This was the result of a current Civey survey commissioned by CosmosDirekt. Generali’s direct insurance company in Germany knows what parents should look for to ensure a safe trip.

Note the legal requirements

The Road Traffic Act (StVO) states that people who are at least 16 years old may transport children up to the age of seven by bicycle. However, the legislature does not set a minimum age at which a child can be taken on a bicycle. It is also required to provide special seats for children. There should be no danger of the child’s feet getting stuck in the rims. To prevent this, parents can, for example, attach a suitable protective cover. The following applies in particular to bicycle trailers: If the trailer is equipped to carry children, a maximum of two children up to the age of seven can travel with it. When transporting a disabled child, the age limit does not apply.[1] There is no legal requirement to wear a bicycle helmet in Germany, not even for children. But no matter how the child is transported by bicycle, a helmet is a must – for children and parents. Because the right and proper bike helmet can prevent serious head injuries in the event of a fall.

Safety starts before you drive

The bike should also be checked regularly for road safety: Are the brakes and bell working properly? Are the bike and bike trailers equipped with lights and reflectors for the working bike? For better signal effect, you can equip bike trailer, cargo bike and co with flag or pennant. This way, other road users can see you more quickly, especially in awkward traffic situations. If children are sitting behind the parents in the child seat or in the bike trailer, a rear-view mirror on the handlebars also helps with child-monitoring. In addition, the child should always be secured with a belt. If only one child is traveling in a bicycle trailer, it is best if they sit in the middle or on the side facing away from the road, unless specified otherwise by the manufacturer.

Experience driving a bike trailer or cargo bike without children provided

If you are taking children with you in a trailer or cargo bike, you need to make sure that you drive carefully and with foresight. It is better for parents to first practice driving a trailer or cargo bike without their children. For example, they can better assess driving behavior in relation to turning circle or braking distance. The parking brake must be applied so that the bike trailer or cargo bike does not become independent when entering and exiting. Care must also be taken on narrow traffic islands: bicycle trailers and cargo bikes should not stand out on the street, as they can be hit by a passing vehicle. So it is best for parents to plan as safe a route in advance as possible. This means that construction sites, bewildering streets and major roads should be avoided if possible. Side streets or paths with bike lanes are safer. A bike trailer can only tip over under extreme conditions while driving, but you shouldn’t drive too fast and avoid driving over high hurdles on one side, for example.[3]

Protected in the event of a bicycle accident

Despite all caution, an accident can always happen. Isolde Klein, Insurance Expert from CosmosDirekt, Therefore it is recommended: “Special accident insurance makes sense for anyone who rides a bicycle regularly, as it applies to all areas of life. Statutory accident insurance only helps with accidents that happen on the direct route to and from work, school or university. Plus private liability insurance is important. For example, if you accidentally cause harm to another person as a cyclist, you can quickly face damage claims. Appropriate insurance can then protect you from financial consequences.”
