What NFT is in football with a special focus on national teams and major leagues?

It’s already been said: NFT teams are on the rise in football. For example, the German Football League (DFL) introduced a corresponding rights package in March 2022. The NFTs are scheduled to launch for the 2023/24 season. Other leagues have taken a similar approach. And of course you should not miss the major tournaments either: FIFA, for example, announced a partnership with cryptocurrency platform Algorand in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup.

This would help the World Federation design its own NFT suite for the World Championships. FIFA’s partnership with, the official sponsor of the World Cup in Qatar, is likely to go in a similar direction. UEFA has also been offering NFTs for a long time: in 2021, the first trophy corresponding to this year’s UEFA Goal of the Year was awarded. The group corresponding to the Champions League was significantly expanded in the 2021/22 season.

As a side note, after issues with fake tickets at the international finals of the season, UEFA is considering incorporating NFTs into future tickets to avoid these issues. In the medium and long term, this appears to be a safe method to use in football as well.

What Football Associations Offer NFTs?

DFL, UEFA and FIFA already rely on NFTs as an offering or would like to do so in the future. But this is not all: the German Football Association, for example, has already concluded a similar cooperation. For its part, ÖFB already has its own NFTs. In Switzerland at least there are such considerations. The Belgian association RBFA is collaborating with the NOEXIS group to promote “digital fan engagement solutions” – and this may include NFTs.

Who are the most popular NFT providers in the German-speaking market?

Fanzone, which also cooperates with DFB, is very popular in German-speaking countries. Also of note is Sorare, who has worked with the DFL in the past for digital trading card games and single player visuals. Algorand should also get a boost from the FIFA collaboration once the NFT kit comes to market. Topps is also very popular as a UEFA NFT partner.

What else do you expect in the future?

In the future, the range of NFTs in the football sector is likely to grow significantly. It’s not just about associations anymore: clubs and individual players have to follow suit if they haven’t already planned. For example, French star Kylian Mbappe joined Surrey. Bayern Munich already offers NFTs to the basketball division.

He almost certainly has or already has football plans in the drawer that affect his football division. It should not be different at other big clubs – and more and more clubs should be interested in this opportunity to please the fans and earn extra money. In Euro 2024 or World Cup 2026, NFTs could have outdone Panini labels, for example.
