Cinematic Summer Days: Cinematic city and country tour – licorice pizza and a fun movie

Restoring audiences is the mission of cinemas in the region. Great expectations are set at the popular cinema days of summer, which also celebrate guest performances in small towns.

Neubrandenburg

Cinemas are still finding it difficult to restore audiences after the restrictions of the Corona period. The recipe for countering the waning mood of cinema in the summer with an outdoor cinema is valid this year.

The association also brings outdoor cinema to the villages

Therefore, the Latücht Film & Medien Association has some predictions for the summer film days, which start next Saturday. In addition to nearly a dozen shows in Neubrandenburg, there are also performances for guests in the region, such as Ankershagen near Müritz and at Ramin near the Polish border.

In the meantime, the mobile cinema has become an important mainstay of the association, states managing director Latocht Holm-Henning Freyer. With over 30 events—not including the Neubrandenburg cult series—the band has been on the road in the east of the country all summer. Collaborations like in the past weeks with the AWO Immigration Center, Stargard Castle or the Neubrandenburg Regional Museum should open up new places and new audiences.

Anti-piracy weakens the association

The association wishes to expand the offer, in the Mecklenburg Lake District as well as in the Vorpommern-Greifswald region. “By doing that, we are doing ourselves a good job economically, and we are doing something to revitalize the rural areas,” says Freer, describing the motivation behind the expansion.

Significant drop in visitor numbers

Ammo should be as popular as possible but not indiscriminate. It was a stroke of luck that the Summer Film Festival was able to secure such current films as the French comedy “Monsieur Claude und Seine Grosse Fest” – especially since many distributors, fearful of illegal copies, find it difficult to make films available on data carriers. However, Latücht-Verein was only able to use the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) format, which is now standard, in its permanent place. The funding request must provide the funds needed to purchase the technology needed to perform the mobile devices. Freer hopes “by next summer at the latest.”

The current season should start restarting the cinema after the mandatory breaks. The previous balance of visitor numbers that are two-thirds lower than “before Corona” is worrying.

Licorice cocktail and pizza

“We’re challenged to think about what we can do outside of the film program,” Freer says. During the summer movie days there will be a barbecue every movie night and the mysterious summer drink “Cinema Royale” will be served; By matching individual films, the collaboration partners also control the special wine in “À la carte! Freedom passes through the stomach,” Love Sarah’s pastry—love is the most important ingredient,” or the custom-made licorice pizza for “licorice pizza,” of course. Mecklenburg-born Jimmy J.’s guitar rock on opening night is followed by more music.

400 events, but hardly any crew

In case of bad weather, the Neubrandenburg performances are moved to Latücht Hall, where performances continue after August in the open air. “If we continue like this, we will have about 400 events by the end of the year,” Fryer calculates — not without concerns that the situation of club personnel is causing him: “This is a fundamental problem that we can only solve together. Sponsors.” There is support from The city of Neubrandenburg, which, however, cannot “manage” it alone: the applicants are not quick to step in for what the club can pay. Projection expert and technician Bernd Basler, who has just retired, continues on a €450 basis, FSJler Bastian Krauß is doing federal volunteer service, successor candidates for the Volunteer Social Year will be introduced soon, event manager Frank Kraus is new on the team.

What after the festival?

Staffing is particularly challenging for the association’s other mainstay, the international dokumentArt festival. In its 30th edition next year, ambitious festival management is required. At least one curator has been found for this year’s Zukunftstreff, which always alternates with the festival: Matthias Wolf, head of drama at Theater und Orchester GmbH for a few years now and currently the press spokesman for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group in Schwerin State Parliament will handle content management For the series of events that will take place in Neubrandenburg, Neustrelitz and Greifswald in the fall.
