Rivers and Lakes in Kalu County: Animals are currently under severe threat from the heat – Kalu

Drought and almost no rain have also reduced the levels of lakes, rivers and streams in the Kalo region. We once asked Andrea Bührig, Chief of Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety in the Calw County Office, about the consequences for bodies of water and the animals that live in them.

Kalu District – Drought and almost no rainfall is causing low levels of lakes, rivers, and streams in the Kalu District. We once asked Andrea Bührig, chief of the Department of Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety in the Calw County Office, about the consequences for bodies of water and the animals that live in them.

How does drought affect the water bodies (rivers, lakes, streams…) in the Kalo region?

Drought means that bodies of water have very little water. Some of the tributaries of the Nagold, Enz and Alb have already dried up, others are nearing completion. As a result, Nagold, Enz, and Alb hold less water as well. Unfortunately, short showers cannot relax or even improve the situation.

How does drought affect animals in and around water bodies?

Low water levels in water bodies have a significant impact on aquatic animals. In particular, overheating of water bodies, growth of algae and lack of oxygen can lead to the death of aquatic organisms and young fish. The proportion of treated wastewater from wastewater treatment plants increases when the water level is low. This results in a higher concentration of pollutants and nutrients in the water. Small bodies of water are particularly affected because some dry up completely. In this case, this leads to the complete death of fish, small aquatic life and aquatic plants. Dry streams also deprive waterfowl, such as divers and kingfishers, of their food base. Habitat and breeding opportunities for amphibians and insects have also been lost.

Are there ways to mitigate the effects of drought?

Warming of water bodies can be significantly reduced by shading them with trees and shrubs. Bodies of water must be revived again and more water must be reserved in the landscape. For this purpose, swamps, mangroves, thickets, floodplain forests and floodplain meadows should be rehydrated. Instead of sealing roofs, rainwater should be allowed to seep away. Climate protection measures must be implemented with priority.

It is currently forbidden to draw water from rivers, etc. Is this doomed? If so, how and how often? And what threatens the water thieves if they are caught?

Unauthorized or prohibited water withdrawals cannot be comprehensively controlled, and our water network is too large for that. However, random examinations are performed. We receive many reports from citizens telling us about withdrawals. If the removal falls under the ban, fines can be imposed.

What is the current role of Nagoldtalsperre (ore mine)?

The minimum delivery of 0.34 m3/s stipulated in the operating regulations of the Nagold Dam can still be observed to increase the low waters of Nagold at present. The Karlsruhe Regional Council (in charge of Nagoldtalsperre) monitors the situation of unusually low waters – and if necessary, the minimum fee will be adjusted after consultation with the responsible authorities. This means that even less water will flow into the Nagold.

Tips and information about saving water

The Calwer County office is currently inviting residents in a handout to save water. Here is the information, tips and advice from the authority’s experts: – We ask all citizens to exercise extreme restraint in their water consumption, regardless of the region. With things going for the time being, the situation could deteriorate further due to not enough rain in sight. – Please be very economical with any use of water, whether in the garden, at home or for other purposes – the removal of water from surface water is basically prohibited by statutory law. Violators will be punished with a fine, refraining from consuming groundwater and drinking water for watering or spraying lawns and spaces, filling swimming pools and washing your car, and refraining from drawing water from wells and spring water openings (including private wells). Please also note the city/community information/prohibitions at the respective wells or springs. It is allowed to water balcony flowers and garden fruits. However, it is best watered in the early morning or late evening hours! – A lot of water is produced in the kitchen, which can be collected and used for watering flowers and in the garden, for example when washing fruits and vegetables. – pick up running water, for example until the hot water comes in – turn off the water while brushing your teeth – take a shower instead of a shower
