cat as a pet Which cat is right for me? Here’s how to find out!
Whether it is a long-haired Maine Coon or a British short-haired – if you want a cat, you are spoiled for choice. In addition to the original cats, mixed breeds also have their own character and fascinate us in their own personal way. Here’s how to find a cat that’s right for you.
If the animal is particularly stubborn, then it is a cat. Four-legged friends have their own will and can be as different as day and night. Some cat breeds are self-determining and very playful, while others cannot get enough cuddles and can even be taught tricks. Before bringing a cat into your home, you must make sure that the nature of the animal suits you. Cat expert and author Alexander Zimmermann knows what to look for when it comes to “catsonality.”
Which cat is right for me? It’s all about “catsonality”.
Frosty Woman: Is every cat the same cat?
Alexander Zimmermann: Not at all. When you have three, four or five kittens in front of you, it is sometimes hard to believe that they are supposed to have the same parents. For example, an inquisitive little nose will immediately try to climb up each leg of a trouser, while a small child will like to hide in his mother’s fluffy fur. So just like us humans, every cat has its own character.

What is the significance of “catsonality” for a posture?
It plays a role that should not be underestimated. Imagine that you want to keep a cat exclusively in the apartment – this is a bad idea for a living specimen, for a free spirit with a desire for freedom. A cat with an open, friendly and cuddly nature is ideal if there are other animals or children in the house. On the other hand, a shy and anxious house cat that defends itself in defenseless situations by scratching or biting would be inappropriate here.
For example, my cat and I are often very similar. We both oscillate between the attention-seeking artist and the lazy bones snoozing on the couch, depending on our everyday moods. In short: cats, people, and living conditions all have to fit together. Mainly in character.
Which cat breed is suitable for what type of person and why?
However, this cannot be answered in general. Certainly, some breeds are said to have certain characteristics. And sometimes this may be true. But it is never possible to collect all cats of a breed together. Maine Coons are totally adventurous. When applied to children, they will be the ones who roam the park as pirates and astronauts. On the other hand, Siamese cats tend to be quiet, cuddly animals who prefer to cuddle their human in front of a fireplace. But like I said, every cat is different. Only real Catsonalitys.

Where can I find a suitable cat?
There are many ways to get a cat: from a breeder, a farm, an animal shelter, a neighbor’s droppings, or from the street.
It all depends on what you want and what you expect from your new four-legged roommate. A cat from a breeder, for example, is already used to people, ideally already, and has mastered the art of going into the litter box. With several visits to the breeder, you can also get to know the kittens better and listen to your gut feeling.
It’s a little different when the cat comes from the farm. Cats are often very young, not vaccinated, and their social contact has hitherto consisted of chickens, pigs, and farm dogs more than humans. So the acclimatization phase will take a little longer and a visit to the vet or two will be necessary.
The great advantage of animal shelters is that you can help the cats and give them a good life or good old age. Because from small to large, from bright to limp on three legs, you can find it all here. The best thing you can do is ask the staff for advice – they know all the strengths and weaknesses of the animals.
